In the spring of 2024 UC Berkeley received a report they had commissioned from Hanbury Architects to determine the feasibility of building student housing on the Anna Head School site. The report presented several models for how to achieve that goal. The Save Anna Head School Steering Committee endorsed the site plan below that illustrates how a student residence could be built on Bowditch, with Channing Hall moved slightly north. While the cost of renovating Channing Hall will be significant, in part due to the deterioration the University has allowed to take place, the Steering Committee has offered to collaborate on a fundraising campaign to help defray the costs. We were disappointed to learn in January that the University had rejected the Hanbury Report and determined they would tear down Channing Hall, one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Berkeley. We continue to believe that the Hanbury Report offers a clear example for how UC Berkeley can achieve its important goal of adding much needed student housing, and how UC can preserve the legacy of the Anna Head School.
